The race for Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election is entering another major phase as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi weigh their options ahead of a proposed summit aimed at producing a single opposition presidential candidate.
The push for opposition unity has gained momentum following a call by a group of political stakeholders for major opposition figures to put aside individual ambitions and work towards presenting one candidate capable of challenging President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress.

The group believes that a fragmented opposition could make it difficult to mount an effective challenge against the ruling party, regardless of the combined strength of the various opposition movements.
As part of efforts to advance the proposal, an opposition summit has been scheduled to take place in Abuja on August 18. The meeting is expected to provide an opportunity for political leaders and representatives of different opposition tendencies to discuss the possibility of cooperation ahead of the 2027 election.
However, questions remain over whether all the major political figures will attend and, more importantly, whether they will be willing to compromise on their individual presidential ambitions.
Atiku’s camp has welcomed initiatives aimed at strengthening the opposition but has not yet confirmed whether the former vice president will personally attend the proposed summit. His representatives said his participation would be communicated after his schedule and other arrangements had been finalised.
Atiku has also reportedly continued consultations with political leaders and stakeholders across the opposition. His camp has maintained that any arrangement designed to unite the opposition must be transparent, inclusive and democratic and should ultimately produce a candidate capable of earning the confidence of Nigerians.
Peter Obi’s support base has also acknowledged the importance of opposition cooperation. The Obidient Movement confirmed that an invitation had been extended to Obi, although it said the final decision on whether he would attend would be left to the former Anambra governor.
The development is significant because Obi remains a major political figure with a strong support base following his performance in the 2023 presidential election. Atiku, meanwhile, has extensive political experience and a nationwide network built from several decades in Nigerian politics.
The possibility of the two politicians working together has therefore continued to generate intense political interest, particularly over who would emerge as the presidential candidate if a consensus is reached.
The Labour Party has also expressed support for opposition collaboration but has argued that any coalition should take advantage of existing political structures rather than create another platform from scratch.
With the 2027 election approaching, the opposition faces the difficult task of balancing personal ambitions, party interests and the broader objective of challenging the APC.
Whether Atiku, Obi and other opposition figures can reach an agreement on a single candidate could become one of the biggest political developments ahead of the election. For now, consultations are continuing, while attention is increasingly shifting towards the August 18 summit and what it could mean for the future direction of Nigeria’s opposition politics.
