A Nigerian social media user has been sentenced to two years imprisonment after spreading a false and disturbing claim about the daughter of popular singers Adekunle Gold and Simi, in a case that has reignited national conversations about cyberbullying, misinformation, and toxic online behavior.

The convicted individual, identified as Samuel Adeboye Adeyeye, popularly known on X formerly called Twitter as Swanky_concept, came under fire after he made a shocking post falsely insinuating that the couple’s young daughter, Deja, had died. In the controversial post, he shared what appeared to be a condolence message directed at the family, writing, “My sincere condolences to the Adekunle family. Rip to Deja.” The false statement quickly spread across social media, causing outrage among fans and users who condemned the act as cruel, reckless, and emotionally damaging.

The matter did not end online. Authorities moved swiftly against the social media user, and he was eventually arraigned in court over charges linked to cyberbullying and defamation. Reports stated that he pleaded guilty to the charges on May 14 before the court delivered its judgment the following day, sentencing him to two years imprisonment.  ..READ THE FULL ARTICLE HERE .

The sentencing has since generated massive reactions online, with many Nigerians describing it as a landmark moment in the fight against fake news and online harassment. Several users argued that the punishment should serve as a serious warning to internet trolls who deliberately spread false information for engagement, clout, or entertainment without considering the emotional and psychological impact on victims and their families. Others maintained that public figures and celebrities should not be treated as if they are immune to emotional pain simply because of their fame.

For years, Nigerian celebrities and public personalities have repeatedly complained about harassment, malicious rumors, and coordinated attacks on social media. From false death reports to edited videos, fabricated scandals, and character assassination, many entertainers have spoken openly about the dangers of unchecked digital abuse. The case involving Adekunle Gold and Simi’s daughter appears to have struck a particularly sensitive nerve because it involved a child, with many people insisting that children and family members of celebrities should never become targets for online content creation or trolling.

The development has also intensified discussions around Nigeria’s cybercrime laws and whether stricter enforcement is needed to sanitize the country’s digital space. Legal observers and social commentators believe the judgment may set a precedent for future cases involving deliberate misinformation and online defamation. Many social media users praised the court for taking decisive action, saying it sends a strong message that freedom of expression should not be confused with the freedom to spread harmful lies.

Reactions across social platforms showed a mix of satisfaction and shock. While some users described the sentence as fair and necessary, others argued that the punishment was still too lenient considering the emotional trauma such false claims could inflict on parents and loved ones. A number of commenters also noted that social media has increasingly become flooded with users chasing virality through controversial and insensitive content, often without accountability.

The case has once again highlighted the darker side of social media culture, where misinformation can spread rapidly within minutes and cause serious emotional distress before the truth emerges. Analysts say the incident should encourage users to think carefully before posting unverified information online, especially when such claims involve children, death, or personal tragedy.

As conversations continue to trend online, many Nigerians are now calling for greater digital responsibility, stronger moderation policies on social platforms, and increased awareness about the legal consequences attached to cyberbullying and false publication. For many observers, the sentencing marks more than just a legal victory for one celebrity family. It represents a broader warning that the era of unchecked online trolling may gradually be coming to an end.
