Peter Obi Challenges UNN to Release His Academic Records Amid Fresh Credential Controversy

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has called on the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, to release his academic records following growing public interest and legal action concerning his educational credentials.

Obi made the position known in a statement on Tuesday, saying he had no objection to the release of his academic certificates, admission documents and other official records relating to his time at the university.

The development comes after a legal action seeking certified true copies of Obi’s university certificate and other records reportedly filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja. The request includes records relating to the Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy that Obi has said he obtained from the University of Nigeria in 1984. Responding to the controversy, Obi said the university should make his records available whenever there is a legitimate request and where such disclosure is permitted by law. He maintained that he had nothing to hide concerning his academic history.

The former Anambra State governor also extended the request to other educational institutions he attended, saying he had no objection to the lawful release of records relating to his education.

The development has attracted renewed attention because Obi is preparing for another presidential contest in 2027, making questions surrounding the qualifications and backgrounds of political candidates particularly significant.

Obi said he welcomed legitimate public interest in his background, qualifications and record, but stressed that any scrutiny should be conducted fairly, transparently and within the boundaries of the law.

The controversy began gaining wider attention after a legal action was initiated seeking access to academic records held by the University of Nigeria, as well as records from other institutions. The case has consequently placed Obi’s educational credentials under increased public scrutiny. (UA News)

Obi’s latest response appears aimed at removing uncertainty over his position on the matter, as he has expressly stated that he is willing for his academic records to be released through legitimate legal and institutional procedures.

The issue is expected to remain part of the political conversation as preparations for the 2027 presidential election intensify. With political figures facing increasing scrutiny over their qualifications and personal records, the handling and possible disclosure of Obi’s academic documents could become an important point of discussion in the months ahead.

For now, Obi has maintained that transparency and accountability should apply to everyone seeking public office, while insisting that such scrutiny must be fair, lawful and consistent.
