The Human and Environmental Development Agenda has said the recent acquittal of former Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke by a United Kingdom court should not bring an end to corruption investigations and asset recovery proceedings against her in Nigeria.
HEDA said the UK verdict should be respected as a decision on the specific bribery charges heard before the court, but stressed that it does not automatically determine the outcome of separate cases or allegations being pursued under Nigerian law.

HEDA also noted that criminal proceedings and asset recovery are separate legal processes, meaning the outcome of a criminal case in one jurisdiction does not necessarily determine the status of assets involved in other proceedings.
The group called on relevant Nigerian agencies to clarify the status of the various investigations and asset recovery cases linked to Alison-Madueke, while ensuring transparency in the management of recovered and forfeited assets.
Alison-Madueke was acquitted in June 2026 of six bribery charges following a trial in London. The verdict, however, does not prevent Nigerian authorities from pursuing separate matters within their legal jurisdiction.
