Tension gripped parts of Osun State after local government chairmen from the Ijesa South Federal Constituency engaged in a heated standoff with military personnel during an enforcement operation aimed at shutting down illegal mining activities in the area.
The operation, which took place in Ibodi, Atakunmosa West Local Government Area, was carried out by the council chairmen alongside operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the Nigeria Police Force following repeated complaints from residents over the environmental destruction and security threats allegedly caused by illegal miners.
According to the local government officials, communities including Iperindo, Itagunmodi, Igangan, Itapa and Odogbo have suffered severe environmental degradation, destruction of farmlands and pollution of streams and other water sources as a result of unregulated mining activities. The situation became tense when the enforcement team encountered military personnel at one of the mining sites. The soldiers reportedly prevented the officials and accompanying security operatives from stopping activities at the location, resulting in a confrontation that briefly disrupted the operation. The standoff was eventually resolved after the intervention of senior security officers and the member representing Ijesa South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, allowing the exercise to continue.
Following the intervention, the enforcement team proceeded to other locations where several illegal mining sites were shut down. The council chairmen also announced an immediate ban on illegal mining activities and warned that only operators with valid licences issued by the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development would be permitted to carry out mining operations in the affected communities.
The incident has once again highlighted the growing challenge of illegal mining in Osun State and the need for stronger collaboration among security agencies, government institutions and host communities to combat environmental degradation and safeguard public safety.
