Nigerian football icon Jay-Jay Okocha has once again been celebrated on the global stage after FIFA officially confirmed that he remains the holder of the record for the most successful dribbles completed in a single FIFA World Cup match. More than three decades after achieving the remarkable feat, Okocha’s record remains unmatched, further solidifying his status as one of the most gifted and entertaining footballers to ever play the game.

According to FIFA statistics, Okocha completed an astonishing 15 successful dribbles during Nigeria’s Round of 16 clash against Italy at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States. What makes the achievement even more remarkable is that it came against one of the strongest defensive teams in world football at the time, featuring legendary defenders such as Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Costacurta and Demetrio Albertini. Despite facing a side renowned for its defensive discipline, Okocha repeatedly danced past opponents with ease, producing a performance that remains etched in World Cup history.

FIFA’s latest recognition has reignited conversations about Okocha’s extraordinary talent and influence on the sport. The record places Okocha ahead of some of the biggest names in football history. Brazil’s Jairzinho and England’s Paul Gascoigne share second place with 13 successful dribbles in a World Cup match, while legendary stars including Johan Cruyff, Diego Maradona, Eusébio and Jamal Musiala are among those who recorded 12 successful dribbles in a single game. Despite the emergence of several modern football stars, none has been able to surpass Okocha’s remarkable achievement.

FIFA also noted that while Lionel Messi holds the overall World Cup record for the highest number of successful dribbles across multiple tournaments, and Maradona remains the player with the most dribbles in a single World Cup edition, Okocha’s record for the most successful dribbles in one match continues to stand alone.

For many Nigerian football fans, the recognition serves as another reminder of Okocha’s immense contribution to the game and his enduring legacy. Widely regarded as one of Africa’s greatest footballers, the former midfielder dazzled audiences throughout his career with his unique style, earning the famous chant that he was “so good they named him twice.” Decades after hanging up his boots, his brilliance continues to be acknowledged by football’s highest governing body, ensuring that his name remains firmly written in the history books of the FIFA World Cup.
