Former Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress following his dramatic defeat in the Delta Central Senatorial primary election, a development that has sent fresh shockwaves through the political landscape in Delta State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Omo-Agege announced his resignation in a letter dated May 22, 2026, addressed to the APC chairman of Orogun Ward 2 in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State. In the letter, the former senator explained that his decision came after consultations with political associates and supporters, as well as recent developments within the party structure in Delta State.
The former Delta Central lawmaker stated that he could no longer remain in a political environment where he believed he would be unable to effectively pursue the interests of his constituents and political supporters. His resignation comes only days after he suffered a massive defeat in the APC direct primary election for the Delta Central Senatorial District. Incumbent Senator Ede Dafinone overwhelmingly defeated Omo-Agege under the party’s Option A4 voting system conducted across the eight local government areas of the district. Official results released by the APC National Assembly Primary Committee showed Dafinone polling 116,252 votes, while Omo-Agege secured only 3,643 votes.
The outcome was particularly surprising because Omo-Agege had earlier declared himself winner of the primary, insisting he had received overwhelming support across the district. His earlier claims had already sparked tension and controversy within the party before the final official results were announced.
Omo-Agege remains one of the most influential political figures in Delta State politics. He served as senator representing Delta Central from 2015 to 2023 and later became Deputy Senate President during the 9th National Assembly under former Senate President Ahmad Lawan. He was also the APC governorship candidate in Delta State during the 2023 elections.
Political observers believe his exit from the APC could trigger fresh realignments within Delta politics, especially among his loyal supporters and political allies across the state. His next political destination remains unclear, but analysts say the resignation may open the door for a possible alliance with another opposition platform ahead of the 2027 elections.
