Operatives of the Zone 2 Command of the Nigeria Police Force have uncovered what authorities describe as a major drug trafficking network operating within Lagos, leading to the arrest of an alleged drug kingpin and the seizure of illicit substances valued at approximately ₦7.8 billion.
The operation, which involved a joint task force made up of the Special Protection Unit (SPU) and divisional police detectives, was carried out in Mende, Maryland, Lagos, after months of intelligence gathering and surveillance on the prime suspect identified as 41-year-old Eke Henry Ifeanyi. Police officials disclosed that hundreds of bags containing suspected “Canadian Loud” and other illicit substances were discovered inside an apartment located within a residential estate. Authorities believe the seized drugs were intended for widespread distribution across Lagos and other parts of the country.
Addressing journalists during the operation, Assistant Inspector-General of Police, AIG Olohundare Jimoh, revealed that law enforcement agents had monitored the activities of the suspects for several months before finally striking on May 19. He noted that the successful operation was made possible through coordinated intelligence efforts and technical support provided under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
The police also confirmed that several suspects connected to the operation were arrested during the raid, while investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend other members of the alleged criminal network. Authorities added that the recovered substances were secured as evidence and would undergo further forensic examination.
The latest bust adds to growing concerns over the increasing sophistication of drug trafficking operations in Nigeria, particularly within Lagos and neighboring states. Security agencies have continued to intensify crackdowns on drug syndicates amid fears that illicit drug circulation is fueling violent crimes, cultism, and other forms of criminal activity across the country.
