The Nigerian entertainment industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of popular Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo, whose passing at the age of 40 has shocked fans, colleagues, and movie lovers across the country and beyond.

Their emotional tributes immediately triggered widespread reactions online as Nigerians struggled to come to terms with the sudden loss of one of Nollywood’s most admired stars.

According to reports, Alex Ekubo had reportedly been battling an undisclosed illness privately for some time before his death. Funke Akindele, visibly heartbroken by the news, shared an emotional tribute on her Instagram page, revealing that she had attempted to reconnect with the late actor before his death. She wrote that she tried reaching out to see him “one more time” but never got the opportunity. Her message quickly resonated with fans who described the tribute as deeply painful and emotional.

Actor Bolanle Ninalowo also mourned the late movie star, praying for strength and healing for his family and everyone affected by the tragic loss. Godwin Nnadiekwe, another close associate of the actor, disclosed that the news had left him devastated and emotionally broken, adding that he was still struggling to process the reality of Alex Ekubo’s death.

Tributes have continued pouring in from across the entertainment industry and social media platforms. Veteran actor Richard Mofe-Damijo described the late actor as a great soul whose life and legacy would not be forgotten. Human rights activist and politician Omoyele Sowore also paid tribute, describing Alex Ekubo as a “rare talent” whose screen presence stood out effortlessly. Singer Peter Okoye of P-Square simply posted “RIP,” while actor Chinedu Ikedieze reacted with shock, asking, “Jesus, how?”

The death of the actor has generated particularly strong reactions because of his long absence from public life in recent months. Fans had already begun expressing concern over his health and wellbeing after he disappeared from social media for an extended period. Reports noted that his last Instagram post was made in December 2024 before he largely vanished from the public spotlight.

Earlier this year, a video showing the actor interacting with children surfaced online and immediately sparked fresh concern among fans. In the clip, Alex Ekubo appeared noticeably slimmer and quieter than usual, prompting speculation about his health condition. Many supporters later admitted that they feared something serious might have been happening behind the scenes.

Born Alexx Ekubo-Okwaraeke on April 10, 1986, the late actor rose to fame after emerging as the first runner-up at the 2010 Mr Nigeria competition. His charisma, fashion sense, and screen presence quickly made him one of Nollywood’s leading actors, especially in romantic dramas and comedy films.

Over the years, he featured in numerous successful productions including Weekend Getaway, Keeping My Man, Bling Lagosians, A Sunday Affair, The Blood Covenant, and Your Excellency. He became known for his charming personality on screen and his ability to effortlessly blend humour, romance, and emotional depth in his performances.

Beyond acting, Alex Ekubo was also widely admired for his humanitarian work and youth advocacy efforts. In 2020, he was recognised among the “Most Influential People of African Descent Under 40” for his contributions to entertainment and social development. He also received multiple awards throughout his career and built a reputation as one of the most stylish and recognisable faces in contemporary African cinema.

Fans across Nigeria and abroad have flooded social media with condolence messages, emotional memories, and clips from his movies. Many described his death as heartbreaking, while others reflected on the fragile nature of life and the hidden battles public figures often face privately. Some supporters admitted they were still finding it difficult to believe that one of Nollywood’s brightest stars was gone so suddenly.

The tragedy has also reignited conversations about mental health, private health struggles, and the pressure celebrities face behind the glamour of public life. Several fans pointed out that social media often hides the personal pain and battles many individuals quietly endure away from cameras and public attention.

As the Nigerian entertainment industry continues to mourn, many colleagues and admirers say Alex Ekubo will be remembered not only for his talent and good looks but also for the warmth, kindness, and positive energy he brought to those around him. His passing leaves a painful void in Nollywood and marks the end of a career many believed still had so much more to offer.
