Atiku isn’t against development—far from it. But he’s questioning the strategy.

He warned that taking on more debt without clear transparency, proper cost analysis, and a solid repayment plan could put the country in a difficult position.

In football language, that’s like signing players without checking if they fit your system—or worse, if you can afford their wages long-term...READ THE FULL ARTICLE HERE .

His message is simple: ambition is good, but reckless spending can backfire.

Economists Split Like Fans in the Stands

Just like fans arguing over a big-money signing, economists are divided.

Some believe the loan could be a smart move. If the highway generates economic value over time, it could “pay for itself”—similar to how a top signing boosts a club’s revenue and performance.

Others, however, are more cautious.

They point to Nigeria’s rising debt profile and warn that relying too much on borrowing—especially externally—could hurt the country’s financial stability.

One economist even stressed that it’s not GDP that repays debt—but revenue. And if revenue is shaky, that’s a serious risk.

Think of it as a club with high income projections but inconsistent matchday revenue—it’s a gamble.

The Bigger Picture

The loan request has already been sent to the Senate for approval, meaning the final decision is still in play.

And just like in football, the outcome could shape the future:

  • Approve it, and you back long-term investment
  • Reject it, and you play it safe financially

Whether in football or governance, the balance is always the same—ambition vs sustainability.

Spend too little, and you fall behind.
Spend too much, and you risk collapse.

For now, Nigeria finds itself in that exact midfield battle—trying to decide whether this “big-money move” is a masterstroke… or a costly mistake waiting to happen.
