Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Nigeria after leading the country’s delegation to the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Shettima represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the global gathering, where Nigeria renewed its call for reforms that would give developing countries and Africa a stronger voice in international decision-making.

A major focus of Nigeria’s diplomatic campaign was the reform of the United Nations Security Council. Nigeria called for permanent African representation on the council, including permanent seats with veto powers for as long as the veto system remains in place...READ THE FULL ARTICLE HERE .

Shettima also used the UNGA meetings to advance Nigeria’s position on international financial reforms, climate financing, sustainable development and greater economic opportunities for developing countries.

During the gathering, Nigeria further pushed for increased investment in education and highlighted the importance of improving access to funding, technology and skills as part of the country’s development strategy.

The Vice President also participated in discussions around Africa’s mineral resources, with Nigeria advocating greater local processing, refining and manufacturing rather than continued dependence on the export of raw minerals.

His return comes after several days of diplomatic engagements involving governments, international organisations, development partners and other stakeholders.

Nigeria’s renewed campaign for UN reform comes amid longstanding African demands for greater representation in global institutions. The continent currently has no permanent seat on the 15-member UN Security Council.

Shettima’s UNGA trip has therefore placed Nigeria’s push for a stronger African voice, alongside issues of development financing, climate support, education and economic cooperation, at the centre of its latest international diplomatic engagements.
