The Independent National Electoral Commission has assured Nigerians that the outcome of the 2027 general election will reflect the sovereign will of the electorate.
The assurance was given by INEC Acting Chairman, Professor Rhoda Gumus, during an engagement with an African Union Pre Election Needs Assessment Mission in Abuja.

She reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to independence, neutrality and professionalism, stressing that administrative decisions would be guided by the law while technology would be deployed to strengthen transparency throughout the electoral process.
The commission is also working with the African Union to identify possible gaps and areas requiring additional technical support ahead of the elections. The AU delegation, led by former Ethiopian Deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonnen, is assessing Nigeria’s level of preparedness for the polls.
Areas being examined include voter registration, the integrity of the voter register, electoral technology, logistics, funding, security, inclusion, transparency, dispute resolution and management of election results.
INEC said lessons from recent off cycle elections in Anambra, the Federal Capital Territory, Ekiti and Osun states would also contribute to preparations for the 2027 elections.
The commission highlighted several areas where additional support could be useful, including training for election personnel, tackling election related disinformation and deepfakes, strengthening election monitoring systems and improving participation among underrepresented groups.
The development comes as political parties and stakeholders intensify preparations for the 2027 general election, with electoral credibility and public confidence expected to remain major issues ahead of the polls.
INEC has therefore urged Nigerians and other stakeholders to recognise that credible elections require the collective responsibility of the electoral commission, political parties, security agencies, civil society organisations, the media, development partners and voters.
With preparations already underway, the commission says it remains focused on delivering an election process in which the final result reflects the votes cast by Nigerians.
