The Canadian government has introduced a temporary policy giving eligible foreign workers greater flexibility to pursue short term studies without obtaining a separate study permit.

The temporary policy removes that particular restriction for eligible work permit holders, providing them with greater flexibility to take short courses, professional training and other qualifying programmes while maintaining their status as workers in Canada.
However, the exemption is not unlimited. An individual must have a valid work permit, and the programme of study must not exceed six months in duration.
The new arrangement also does not automatically extend a person’s immigration status. The authorisation to study without a study permit remains tied to the validity of the individual’s work permit and the duration of the temporary policy.
The measure is scheduled to remain in effect until December 31, 2027, although the government retains the authority to cancel or modify the policy before that date.
