Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has called on Nigerians to remember and honour citizens who lost their lives in the struggle for democracy and good governance.
Obi made the call while speaking in Osun State, where he stressed the importance of preserving the memories and sacrifices of Nigerians who fought for democratic rule.

The former Anambra State governor said remembering those who died for democracy should go beyond occasional ceremonies. He argued that their sacrifices should inspire Nigerians and political leaders to build a country where justice, accountability, equality and respect for citizens’ rights are upheld.
Obi also emphasised the need for Nigerians to understand the history of the country’s democratic struggle and ensure that younger generations appreciate the sacrifices made by those who fought for political freedom.
He noted that democracy should not merely be about elections and the transfer of political power. Rather, it should translate into better living conditions, economic opportunities, security, quality education, accessible healthcare and a government that remains accountable to the people.
The Labour Party figure’s comments came amid continued discussions about the state of democracy and governance in Nigeria. He urged citizens to remain committed to democratic values and to recognise the role ordinary Nigerians have played in defending the country’s democratic aspirations.
Obi’s message also served as a reminder that the freedoms Nigerians exercise today were shaped by years of political struggles, activism and resistance. He maintained that the best way to honour those who sacrificed their lives is to protect democracy and work towards a more prosperous and just society.
He further encouraged Nigerians to participate actively in the democratic process and hold elected officials accountable for their decisions.
As Nigeria continues to navigate its democratic journey, the call to remember those who paid the ultimate price has renewed attention on the responsibilities of both leaders and citizens in protecting the country’s democratic institutions.
For Obi, preserving the memory of democracy’s fallen heroes should serve as a constant reminder that the struggle for a better Nigeria requires continued commitment, responsible leadership and active participation from citizens.
