Preparations for the highly anticipated Osun State governorship election have entered a crucial stage as sensitive electoral materials have arrived in the state ahead of Saturday’s poll.
The Independent National Electoral Commission is also preparing to draw ad hoc election personnel from a pool of more than 30,000 members of the National Youth Service Corps as part of efforts to ensure adequate manpower for the election.

INEC disclosed that more than 2.3 million voters are registered in Osun State and are eligible to participate in the election, although the commission said it did not yet have the updated figure of voters who collected their Permanent Voter Cards following the extension of the collection exercise.
The electoral body explained that sensitive materials, including ballot papers and Bimodal Voter Accreditation System devices, had already been secured in the state.
The materials are being kept under security arrangements, with INEC refusing to disclose the exact time they arrived in Osun or provide details that could expose the movement of the materials to security threats.
According to the commission, the sensitive materials are expected to be moved from their secure location to local government offices and subsequently to Registration Area Centres as part of the final logistics arrangements.
INEC is also expected to deploy non sensitive materials, electoral personnel and security personnel ahead of election day to ensure that polling units are adequately prepared before voting begins.
The commission said the logistics plan was designed to allow officials and materials to reach polling locations early enough for voting to commence as scheduled.
The preparation has also seen a major security build up across the state, with more than 25,000 personnel drawn from different security agencies deployed for the election.
The security deployment includes personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
The security agencies are expected to protect voters, electoral officials, observers, journalists, election materials and other stakeholders before, during and after the election.
The NSCDC has also strengthened its presence in the state by deploying additional personnel from neighbouring states to support security operations across Osun’s 30 local government areas.
Specialised security units have equally been deployed to assist with intelligence gathering, crime prevention, crowd control and the protection of critical infrastructure.
The extensive security arrangement comes against the backdrop of heightened political activities as 14 political parties prepare to contest the August 15 governorship election.
The poll is expected to be closely watched as political parties and their candidates intensify their final mobilisation efforts ahead of election day.
With sensitive materials now in the state and electoral personnel being prepared for deployment, attention is shifting towards the final stages of the electoral process.
INEC is expected to continue coordinating the movement of materials and personnel to ensure that voters can access their polling units and participate in the election without unnecessary delays.
The security agencies also face the responsibility of maintaining neutrality and ensuring that voters and political participants are protected without discrimination.
