The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has recorded another major victory in its ongoing war against illicit drug trafficking after intercepting 1.63 million pills of tramadol concealed in specially modified trailers used by a transnational drug syndicate operating along the Togo, Benin Republic and Nigeria corridor. The intelligence driven operation is being described as one of the agency’s biggest recent breakthroughs in disrupting cross border drug networks.

According to the NDLEA, the operation followed the interception of another truck carrying 558,900 tramadol pills barely a week earlier, prompting investigators to intensify surveillance on the criminal network. Acting on fresh intelligence, operatives tracked two trailers travelling towards Kano and discovered that the narcotics had been hidden inside specially fabricated compartments beneath the cargo floors in an apparent attempt to evade security checks.

The first trailer was intercepted along the Lagos Ibadan Expressway, where officers recovered 853,000 pills of 250mg tramadol and arrested the 22 year old driver, Jabir Kabiru. Two days later, a second trailer travelling on the same route was stopped, leading to the recovery of another 777,000 pills of the opioid and the arrest of another 22 year old suspect, Muhammed Nuhu. Investigations later confirmed that the two seizures, together with an earlier intercepted shipment, were all linked to the same international drug trafficking syndicate...READ THE FULL ARTICLE HERE .

The nationwide anti narcotics operation also resulted in several other high profile arrests. At the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, NDLEA operatives intercepted two consignments of Canadian Loud, a synthetic strain of cannabis, weighing 4.7 kilograms. The illicit drugs, which arrived on separate international flights from Canada, were concealed inside cartons labelled “Odugwu.” Investigations led to the arrest of cargo agents and the alleged owner of the shipments, a businesswoman who reportedly confessed that she was introduced to the drug trade by an associate based in Canada.

In separate operations across Rivers, Edo and Kogi states, the agency arrested an 80 year old suspected drug dealer, dismantled a warehouse containing hundreds of kilograms of cannabis and Canadian Loud, and apprehended additional suspects linked to the distribution of tramadol across state borders. These coordinated operations underscore the agency’s determination to dismantle organised drug trafficking networks operating within and outside Nigeria.

The latest seizures highlight the growing sophistication of drug trafficking syndicates and the challenges facing security agencies in combating the illegal narcotics trade. However, the NDLEA insists it will continue to strengthen intelligence gathering, surveillance and interagency collaboration to prevent dangerous substances from reaching Nigerian communities. The agency also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and support ongoing efforts by providing credible information that could help expose criminal networks involved in drug trafficking across the country.
