The Kano State Government has approved the sum of N1.5 billion to sponsor a large scale mass wedding programme that will see 1,500 couples officially get married under a state backed social intervention initiative.
The announcement was made by the Commander General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, who said the programme is part of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s efforts to ease the economic burden associated with marriage and strengthen family values across the state.
According to officials, the initiative will directly benefit 3,000 individuals comprising 1,500 prospective husbands and 1,500 prospective wives selected from thousands of applicants across Kano State. The government said every couple will receive substantial support packages aimed at helping them establish stable homes from the outset. These packages will include essential household items such as beds, mattresses, pillows, bedsheets, cupboards and food supplies. In addition, financial assistance will be provided to both spouses. Brides will receive N100,000 as business start up support, while grooms will also be given N100,000 to help cover marriage related expenses and dowry obligations.
Before being cleared to participate, all intending couples must undergo mandatory medical examinations. The screening process includes tests for HIV, hepatitis, genotype compatibility and pregnancy, with authorities insisting that only medically eligible applicants will be allowed to proceed with the marriage ceremony.
The Hisbah Board also disclosed that beneficiaries will receive marriage counselling and sensitisation sessions focused on marital responsibilities, conflict resolution and Islamic family principles. Officials believe these measures will improve the chances of long term marital stability.
The mass wedding programme has become one of Kano’s most recognisable social welfare initiatives since it was first introduced in 2012. Over the years, successive administrations have continued the exercise, arguing that it helps vulnerable citizens, widows, divorcees and low income residents overcome financial barriers to marriage.
However, the programme has repeatedly generated nationwide debate, with critics questioning whether billions of naira should be allocated to mass weddings at a time when many states are grappling with pressing challenges such as education, healthcare, unemployment and infrastructure deficits. Supporters, on the other hand, argue that the initiative promotes social stability, reduces economic hardship and helps tackle societal issues affecting young people.
