The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has granted bail to popular social media activist and commentator Justice Chidiebere, widely known as Justice Crack, in the sum of N5 million over alleged cybercrime offences that have continued to generate widespread public attention across Nigeria. The ruling was delivered by Justice Joyce Abdulmalik amid tight security and growing debate surrounding freedom of expression and online activism in the country.
According to the court, the activist is required to provide one surety in like sum as part of the conditions attached to his release. The judge ruled that the surety must reside within the jurisdiction of the court and must have maintained a fixed residential address for at least four years. The surety is also expected to provide verifiable proof of residence through either a tenancy agreement or a certificate of occupancy.
The court further ordered that the surety must be a federal civil servant not below Grade Level 15 with evidence of pensionable employment and proof of at least three months’ salary payments. In addition, the surety is expected to submit an affidavit of means, a recent passport photograph and authentication documents from the individual’s head of department. Justice Crack is currently facing charges linked to alleged cybercrime activities following the circulation of controversial social media content said to involve the Nigerian Army. Prosecutors accused the activist of publishing statements and materials capable of inciting public unrest and creating disaffection within the military. Authorities claimed that some of the online posts contained allegations regarding poor welfare and feeding conditions affecting Nigerian soldiers, an issue that reportedly sparked serious concern within security circles.
The case has experienced several dramatic twists since the activist’s arraignment.
